Frequently asked questions

What is CryptPad?

CryptPad is a free, open-source, end-to-end encrypted collaboration suite. It includes rich text editing, spreadsheets, code editing, kanban boards, whiteboards, and more. All encryption happens in your browser — the server never sees your unencrypted data.

How is VaultSuite different from cryptpad.fr?

cryptpad.fr is the official hosted instance run by the CryptPad team. It's a shared instance where you share resources with other users. VaultSuite gives you a dedicated CryptPad instance running in its own isolated container, with your own address, automated backups, and guaranteed resources. Think of it as the difference between shared hosting and a dedicated server.

Can you read my documents?

No. All encryption and decryption happens in your browser. Your encryption keys never leave your device. We physically cannot read your documents — even if we wanted to or were compelled by law enforcement. This is the core privacy guarantee of end-to-end encryption.

Where is my data stored?

Your instance and every document in it are hosted in the EU (Amsterdam) — and because encryption happens in your browser, what's stored there is ciphertext to begin with. We're finalizing our formal GDPR compliance program; the practical privacy guarantee is stronger than any certification: we never hold a readable copy of your work.

What happens if I cancel?

Your instance keeps running until the end of the period you've paid for. When the subscription ends, the instance and its encrypted data are deleted — so export your documents first (it's one click in CryptPad). Your workspace name stays reserved for you, and resubscribing deploys a fresh instance under the same address.

Can I export my data?

Yes. CryptPad has built-in export functionality for all document types. You can export to PDF, DOCX, HTML, Markdown, and more at any time. There's no vendor lock-in.

What if VaultSuite shuts down?

You keep everything. VaultSuite runs open-source CryptPad, your documents export in one click to standard formats (PDF, DOCX, Markdown, and more), and the whole stack is self-hostable — so even if we disappeared, you could take your encrypted data and run the same software yourself. We've watched other privacy services get acquired and shut down overnight, stranding their users; the open-source, exportable, self-hostable design is our guarantee that this can't happen to you here.

What is scale-to-zero?

Scale-to-zero means your instance automatically goes to sleep when not in use and wakes up when you access it. This saves resources and money. The wake-up takes about 5 seconds. Lite and Default tiers use scale-to-zero; Team tier is always-on.

What happens when I run out of storage?

Nothing dramatic. Your storage is dedicated to your own instance — it isn't a shared bucket pooled with an inbox or a photo library, so filling it up never freezes your email or blocks you from editing files you've already created. If you need more room, move up a tier; there's no surprise overage billing, and we'll never lock you out of your own data.
